Virginia Zhelyazkova is a professor at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and a doctor of science in the field of circular economy and sustainable finance. She combines scientific research with many years of practice in the banking system, being responsible for the environmental policy of a systemic bank in the period 2011-2023, and is currently an independent international consultant in the field of ESG and circular economy for large projects.
Prof. Zhelyazkova is also the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Quality (2013 – 2022) of the Higher School of Insurance and Finance and a lecturer at the same university at the moment. She is the initiator of the introduction of mandatory training in the disciplines “Circular Economy” and “ESG Policies” for students and is the author of the first university textbooks on these disciplines in Bulgarian, three books and over 50 scientific publications on the issues of financial provision of the green transition.
Over the years, she has given guest lectures and training seminars at universities and business organizations in the country and abroad – in Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Kazakhstan and India – on topics related to the financial aspects of ESG policies.
In the period 2013-2016, Prof. Zhelyazkova was the national contact person for Bulgaria on issues of the EU’s Horizon 2020 research framework program at the European Commission in Brussels.
